Products & Choosing Gear

For most trout fishing, a 9' 5-weight is the classic all-around choice: it handles dry flies, nymphs and small streamers on rivers and lakes. Go lighter (3–4 wt) for small streams and delicate dries, or step up to a 6-weight for big rivers, wind and heavier streamers. Browse every length and weight in our fly rods collection, including the versatile GORGE fly rod.

Our complete outfits take the guesswork out of matching gear. The STONE FLY combo includes a 4-piece rod, a Talon reel pre-spooled with weight-forward floating line, backing and leader, plus a Cordura travel case. GORGE rod, reel and fly line bundles are another popular starting point, though backing and a leader are sold separately. Compare options in Outfits, or call 888-727-0166 for advice.

Products named Combo, such as STONE FLY, TIMBER HAWK and PASSAGE, arrive ready to fish with backing, fly line and a tapered leader pre-spooled on the reel. Products named Bundle pair a series rod (GORGE, DOUBLE XX, AURELIUS, SALISH, QUILL or NX) with a matched reel and fly line, but don't include backing or a leader. Add here. See all Outfits.

Start with the SALISH fly rod, our 9' fast action saltwater series in 6 to 12 weight with hard-anodized guides, a machined aluminum reel seat and a large fighting butt. Pair it with a sealed reel like the SDX or the full-frame CAGE, and a Prime Premium SALT fly line built for tropical water.

Yes. The PASSAGE 4WT combo features an 8', 6-piece rod, an ultra-light line-loaded Raven reel and a mini 19-inch Cordura case. It's great for backpacking and carry-on travel. Most other Maxxon rods are 4-piece and ship in a Cordura travel tube, and our rod and reel travel cases hold a 4-piece rod with the reel attached.

Fly Rods

GORGE is our value freshwater series in mid-modulus graphite, 3–10 wt. DOUBLE XX adds 10' options in 4, 5 and 6 wt. AURELIUS uses 57-million-modulus graphite with medium-fast to fast actions for tight loop s and tippet protection. SALISH is our fast saltwater and big-game rod, 6–12 wt. All are 4-piece come with travel tubes.

They describe the shape of the cork grip. A half-wells handle tapers at the front and suits lighter rods (roughly 3–6 wt) and delicate presentations. A full-wells handle flares at both ends, giving your thumb a firm push point for powerful casts with heavier lines and bigger flies, so it's standard on our 6–12 wt models. Each option is listed by model on our fly rods.

The NX Nymphing Rod was built for Czech, Euro and tight-line nymphing with input from competition anglers and guides. It comes in 10'6" 3-weight and 10' 2-weight, uses single-foot guides to stay light and avoid tip-heaviness, and has dual down-locking rings that seat the reel lower for better balance during long, high-stick drifts.

The QUILL fly rod is a feather-light 6'6", 3 piece, medium-fast rod in 3, 4 and 5 weight. Its shorter length cuts the overhead clearance you need by about 21⁄2 feet, and the matte, low-flash blank helps avoid spooking wary fish. Pair it with a SLIM click-and-pawl reel for a classic small-water setup.

Yes. Spare sections for most Maxxon rods are sold on our Parts page, such as the GORGE section. Note the section
number (counting from the handle) at checkout. Section 1, the handle, must be ordered by phone or email. Registered
owners can also use the Limited Lifetime Warranty—see Warranty & Repairs.

Fly Reels

Match the numbers. Fly reels are sized for arange of line weights, and that range should include your rod and line weight. For a 5-weight rod and 5-weight line, choose a 5/6 reel such as the TALON or MAX. A correctly sized reel holds enough backing and balances the rod in your hand. Browse every size in our fly reels collection.

It depends on reel size and target fish. Our capacity charts list it per model: for example, the TALON 5/6 holds a WF- 5F line plus 100 yards of 20 lb backing, and the TALON 9/10 holds a WF-9F line plus 180 yards of 30 lb. Use 20 lb backing for trout and 30 lb for larger species. Shop backing line in 50 to 3,000-yard spools.

Disc-drag reels like the TALON, XG and MAX use large arbors and adjustable drag to stop strong runs and pick up line fast. Click-and-pawl reels like the SLIM are simpler, lighter and slimmer, a classic match for 2–6 wt trout, glass and bamboo rods. Most Maxxon disc-drag reels also convert for left- or right-hand retrieve.

Choose a sealed, fully machined reel. The SDX and SDP are CNC-machined from 6061-T6 aluminum with sealed carbon multi-disc drags and TRAXX numbered spool caps. The full-frame CAGE, in 8, 10 and 12 wt, suits big-game single-hand, switch and Spey rods. Rinse any reel with fresh water after a day in the salt.

Fly Lines

A weight-forward floating line matched to your rod weight covers most freshwater situations, from dry flies to nymphs. Our Standard Prime FRESH is a great all-around choice. The Prime Premium FRESH adds an extremely high-floating 0.75 SG coating and Teflon-treated Flex-Cote for longer, smoother casts. Shop all fly lines.

Ready To Go Fly Line PLUS is an all-in-one pack for filling a reel or spare spool. It includes a high-floating weight- forward fly line, high-visibility backing (20 lb for 3–6 wt, 30 lb for 7–10 wt) and a 9' clear tapered leader sized for that line weight. It's offered in 3 through 10 weight, so you get everything needed for one spool.

Yes. For streamers and fishing deeper water, choose Prime Premium SINK TIP Type-2 or Type-4 in 5–10 weight, or the Rapid Sink line in 300–450 grain with an 18' sinking head. We also offer double-taper, BIG GAME and SALT floating lines. See every option in fly lines.
